Is it legal to put a sports exhaust on my car?
There's sometimes confusion about if sports exhausts are legal to put on your car. This depends on whether you want to de-cat (take the catalytic converter off) your car. De-CAT'ing your car is done to remove restrictions and improving performance. BUT, by de-CATing your car, you are also pumping out harmful emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. The catalytic converter works when it reaches its optimum working temperature, and converts the gases into water vapour and less harmful gases.
It involves replacing a section of the exhaust that has the catalytic converter, and replacing it with a section that is empty. In practise however, this usually makes most modern cars unable to pass their MOT.
In steps the CAT Back exhaust, which is fitted on your car from the CAT backwards, so the CAT is not removed. The CAT back exhaust is the part of the exhaust system from the outlet of a catalytic converter to the final vent to open air.
Resonated and non-resonated Cobra exhausts
For those of you who prefer a quiter ride whilst retaining the performance boost, a resonated Cobra exhaust might be just what you need. A resonator is a box chamber incorporated into the exhaust system, which is used to make the exhaust quieter, as it cancels certain sound frequencies.
In contrast, non-resonated exhaust systems give a louder exhaust note. Whichever way you choose to go, both types of exhaust give an enhanced sound, and of course enhanced performance.

This results in a much better engine response and better BHP. Cobra Sport suggest that you will get around a 10% improvement in engine response after fitting a CAT-back system.
