Why upgrade to performance brakes?
It might sound odd, but braking systems are quite often one of the last things that drivers think to upgrade when undertaking vehicle modifications. They get fixated on increasing the power, improving the handling, firming up the ride, getting it lower to the ground, more traction - all for more speed. But if you can go faster, it seems only fair that you’ll need to stop faster too.

There are a number of different options available for improving how efficiently your car can stop, some of which will depend on your cars current set up.

For those cars currently running on disc brakes, it is a relatively simple process to swap out your standard brake discs, calipers and pads for upgraded parts. If your car is older and running on drum brakes on the back or even all round, swapping them out for disc brakes will make a huge difference, however it can be a quite a complicated process. How disc brakes make you stop
Brakes are run on a hydraulic system. Put simplistically; there is a reservoir of brake fluid in a master cylinder, from which pipes lead to calipers and discs at each wheel. When the brake pedal is depressed, the space within the cylinder and pipes is reduced, increasing the pressure in the hydraulic system. That pressure then enacts a gripping mechanism at each wheel.
Each cylinder has a disc attached to it and the wheel is bolted through the whole lot. A caliper slots over the disc and brake pads attach to plates on the interior sides of the caliper. Inside the caliper are a set of pistons or ‘pots’ which are activated when the pressure from the brake fluid is applied with the pedal.
As a general rule, the more cylinders or bigger your pots are, the harder your pads will grip the disc and the more efficiently you will stop.
