BMW built the E30 M3 to homologate a competitive car for Group A touring car racing, and that motorsport brief shaped the whole car: a high-revving four-cylinder S14 engine, developed from the M1 supercar's straight-six with two cylinders removed, boxed wheel arches for a wider track, and a bodyshell substantially reworked from the standard E30 3 Series.

Suspension and chassis is by far the largest category in this range, consistent with a lightweight, mechanically simple platform that owners tend to keep on top of for track and fast road use. Engine and tuning parts and drivetrain components make up smaller but steady categories, with exhaust, braking and cooling parts covering a narrower range than on newer M3 generations - a reflection of the E30's age and lower production volume rather than reduced demand.
