The E36 M3 replaced the E30's four-cylinder with BMW's first six-cylinder M3 engine, the S50 (later the S52 for some markets), moving the car from homologation special toward a more usable, everyday-capable performance coupe. It was also the first M3 generation available as a saloon and convertible alongside the coupe.
