The F80 M3 marked a turning point for the model: the first turbocharged engine in the M3's history, the S55 twin-turbo straight-six, replacing the naturally aspirated V8 of the E9X generation. It's also the point where BMW split the M3 name from the two-door body style - from the F80 onward, the saloon keeps the M3 badge while the coupe and convertible become the M4.
